Since I've spent many summers horse packing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, I decided to base the fifth Gail McCarthy mystery on adventures and experiences I've had there. Though the central crime on which the story turns is fictitious, many of the minor incidents have either happened to me or to my companions on various pack trips. And the lakes, mountains and passes are all modeled on places I have really seen. I hope this book brings the Sierra Nevada Mountains to life both for those who have been there and those who haven't.
Happy trails,

As Gail gradually realizes she is being hunted through the mountains by someone who is deadly serious, she is forced to use all her skill and ingenuity to discover the tracker and turn the tables. Gail’s veterinary training is put to some unusual uses in a complex mystery with a surprising cast of characters--both human and equine.
Slickrock abounds in the interesting and accurate
western horse lore Laura Crum is known for, and paints a vivid picture
of the wild and empty mountains of the Sierra Nevada range. In this fifth
adventure, Gail meets with unexpected challenges, and finds that her life
is dramatically changed.
"Some
finely drawn portraits, a tight plot that keeps its secrets until the end
and a spectacular assist from Mother Nature make for memorable reading."
Publishers Weekley
"Descriptions
of breathtaking natural surroundings abound, as do adept equine and human
characterizations. Steadily paced but lively; a good series bet."
Library Journal
""The gently mounting tension in Crum's fifth is just the thing for readers."
